What Passes for Play
The Library 36 x 24 inches oil on wood

Sail, Again. 48 x 48 inches
This body of work incorporates materials and tools I associate with the ease of childhood - watercolors, gouache, crayons, colored pencils, markers, ink pens, needle and thread, scissors, cloth or paper.
My posture as I work is childlike, especially when I work on large pieces spread out on the floor.
Within the context of life, my mind is overcrowded, my nervous system tense, and my heart distressed about the state of our world. My memories weigh on me and I’m frustrated by my limitations. It all seems too complicated.
When I’m on the floor making things with these simple tools my mind and heart open. My hand is aging but remembers youth when it’s holding a crayon. Pretense drops away, along with any striving to do things in the proper or acceptable or ambitious way. There’s a purity I find relieving.
What Passes for Play offers a measure of delight and curiosity in the margins of hard equations humanity must solve if we’re to survive and learn to make things whole together.
