PROCESS
My work is as much a process of careful construction as an act of expression. I build paintings in a rhythm of spontaneous motion, quiet contemplation, and an attentive practice of expounding then obscuring, over and over in many layers over many months. ORIENTATION I am a colorist, dedicated to the process of building up beautiful and complex fields of paint. My work is internally driven and rarely an expression of specific people, items, or places that exist in the world. HISTORY I am completely self-taught and have been working seriously since 2002. I'm dedicated and prolific and have sold well over a thousand paintings, though my work is more painstaking now and I produce fewer paintings per year. STUDIO I live in the mountain city of Asheville, NC, and maintain a downtown studio where I always have about a dozen paintings in various stages of completion in addition to completed paintings and drawings. Visitors are welcome by appointment. |
Sign up for my newsletter to see new works of both kinds first. The Lou Evans paintings sell within a week for very affordable prices at auction, so this is your best chance to buy.

In addition to my signature work, I also paint smaller quicker work, which I sell both at auction and through my studio. You can find those (VERY affordable) paintings here.
WHY? It is natural for an artist who who does challenging work to begin taking Art very very seriously. I think that's an unnecessarily dangerous road, one that leads to emotional turmoil and mental dissonance. It is easy for an artist whose work begins to command high prices to feel pressure to only create a particular kind of work in order to attract the right galleries, or to protect an image (and arbitrarily projected speculative future secondary market prices). I think that's an unnecessarily limiting road. |
And for me personally, building my whole life and livelihood around selling only big important paintings makes me uncomfortable. I can't sell the demanding work for less, but I appreciate everyone who likes my work enough to offer hard-earned money in exchange - so I like to have some good paintings most people can afford.
I live an ordinary life. What's extraordinary about it is that I manage a to build in an unusual amount of freedom. I do the work I want to do, when I want to do it. I realize every single day how fortunate I am to have so many choices. That's what these paintings are about.
